How to Avoid Spamming?

Hi readers!

Welcome back.

In this blog, I have brought forward how one can avoid spamming in their emailers, it's roles and definitions:

  • What is Spamming?
Email Spamming

Spamming refers to unsolicited bulk email. For example, as a user if you are receiving unsolicited email then it's a spam. Similarly, if you are sending unsolicited bulk email then it's a spam.

Ways to identify and catch spam:

  1. They look at "Email Content" very seriously whether it includes words like "win million awards, lottery, free, sign up for free" and mark them as spam.
  2. They look at "Subject Line" whether it includes words like "win, free, prize, ponzi scheme, transfer money" and mark them as spam.
  3. They also look at the "Sender's History" i.e. the history of the email id you are using to send emails. So, if you are sending a lot of spam emails then you will get a bad history and ESP will identify as such emails will not deliver. They also check the IP address by which you are sending your email.
  4. They also look at "Image, Video and Link Quality".
  5. Lastly, they look at the "Frequency of Sending Emails", for instance, if you are sending emails every hour then they will mark you as spam.

  • Role of Email Service Provider (ESP)
ESP plays a central role in stopping the spam from happening. Generally, ESP like Mailchimp help in crafting email or creative templates. They provide an exchange server, which is a server that works at the back end and makes sure that the email is received by the person who is supposed or likely to receive it and there are no issues. ESP also checks for spam or phishing or malware and mark those emails as spam and provide analytics.
Role of an ESP

  • Spam Laws in the US
Spam laws in US are extremely strict so you have to be extremely careful while you are sending emails there as you can be legally prosecuted for sending an email which is unsolicited.

These are the following practices US wants you to follow:

  1. There should be a "Button" for people to unsubscribe.
  2. The contact address of the sender should be spelled out clearly (Sender's Address).
  3. "Reply To" should be enabled so that people can respond to that email.
  4. Email heading, name of the business and email content should be relevant
  • Phishing
Phishing

Phishing is an extremely dangerous and punishable crime, where people craft emails and send it out to people which looks to be coming from a genuine source. For example, you have an account in HDFC bank and you receive an email from HDFC bank asking for your account details like account number, birth date, etc. but is actually from a different source. This has become very common these days and many people who are unbothered are getting robbed so you should be extremely careful that you don't give your account details to emails or calls coming from any source before verifying it.

See you until next time:)
