What is Search Engine Optimization?

Hi readers!

In this blog, I will tell you about:

  1. Anatomy of a Search Engine Results Page (SERP)
  2. Why being on top of a page is important?
  3. Role of SEO

  • Anatomy of Search Engine Results Page:
Typically, when we think about Google and Search, we just think about one type of a result but that is not so. Google serves its results based on our own queries.
Here are some queries and how the search result element changes by the queries that we have for Google:
  1. If you just have the basic information, it will show the website links in its search results.
  2. If you want some location based searches, it will show you maps.
  3. If you want product based service, it will show you product listings.
  4. If you want image related searches, it will show you images.
  5. If you want Google Business Listings, it will show you reviews.
  6. If you want to learn something or how to, it will show you Youtube videos, Forums like Quora.
  7. If you want latest news, it will show you articles, twitter, etc.
  8. It also has answers based on a location. If you ask same query in a different city or regions, you will get different answers.
  • Why being on top of the page is important:
The main reason is that 90% of the users do not beyond the first page. So, whenever you search a query, if you find it on the first page then you just open the link and go to the website, but if you doesn't find your answer, most of the times you search another query instead of going to the second page. So, if your website doesn't appear on the first page, it has very less chances of getting a click. Also, on the first page, though there are 10 results but the top 3 results gets 60% of the traffic. In fact, the first website on the search results gets 32% of the traffic, the second website gets 17% and the third one gets 11% of the traffic. And only 40% of the traffic is distributed among the last 7 websites. So, if you doesn't rank in the top 3 or your rank goes down, the overall traffic of the website would reduce significantly, most importantly from Google Search.
  • Role of SEO:
The SEO makes sure that your website is appearing or ranking high on the relevant Search Engine results so that you can get the maximum amount of traffic, basically it helps the brand's web properties appear on top of the search results. Also, the traffic that comes to our website is organic and free and can also result in leads and sales sometimes.

See you until next time :)
